Republic of Moldova: PM appoints new foreign minister to boost EU accession efforts

The vice-chairman of the parliament, Mihai Popsoi, will take over the position of minister of foreign affairs, announced premier Dorin Recean in the government meetig in Kishinev, according to the portal Deschide.md.‘Starting with next week, the portfolio at the ministry of foreign affairs will be taken over by the vice-chairman of the parliament, Mihai Popsoi. I want to thank Mr Popsoi to join the governmental team’ he said.At the same time, Recean said that a new minister will appear in the governmental structure. It is about the ministry for European affairs which will be led by the present state secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Cristina Gherasimov.‘The portfolio for European integration will be given to Cristina Gherasimov, who will lead the ministry for European Affairs which will also coordinate the activity of the Bureau for European Integration’ added the head of the Moldova executive.Nicu Popescu announced on Wednesday that he left the position of minister of foreign affairs stating that he needs a break, but he mentioned that he would continue to contribute to the efforts of accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU.Indeed, Mihai Popsoi had a first phone discussion with the minister of foreign affairs of Romania, Luminita Odobescu, after taking over his position of head of the Moldova diplomacy. The announcement was made by Odobescu herself on Twitter, where she wanted to address Popsoi a congratulation message on this occasion, according to Deschide.md.   Previously, Luminita Odobescu came with a reaction to Nicu Popescu’s decision to announce his resignation. According to the head of Romanian diplomacy, Nicu Popescu’s mandate will remain connected to the historic success of getting the decision to start the negotiations for Republic of Moldova’s accession to the EU.
