Establishment of Romania-Turkey Strategic Cooperation Council discussed by Foreign Ministers Odobescu and Fidan

  Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey Hakan Fidan, on a visit to Romania, had a meeting on Wednesday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) headquarters with the head of diplomacy in Bucharest, Luminita Odobescu, one of the topics discussed being the launch of a high-level dialogue platform through the establishment of a Romania-Turkey High Level Strategic Cooperation Council."I discussed with Mr. minister the preparation of the launch of the High Level Strategic Cooperation Council between Romania and Turkey, which will basically follow the concept of joint government meetings, where key priorities in strategic areas of interest to both countries will be established. It is a joint initiative that illustrates unequivocally the importance that both countries attach to the strategic dimension of this relationship," Luminita Odobescu stressed in a press statement.The Romanian official thanked Turkey for its participation in the air policing missions and the decision to create a naval demining group in the Black Sea.Luminita Odobescu told her Turkish counterpart that Ukraine's victory in the war waged by Russia is vital for the security and stability of the Black Sea region.In this context, the Romanian minister mentioned the need to further support the Republic of Moldova to resist the hybrid pressures it has to withstand.Odobescu also reiterated that, for Romania, Turkey remains a candidate state for membership of the European Union."It is important for Romania to strengthen cooperation between the EU and Turkey in sectoral areas of interest. I have expressed my support for the resumption of the meetings of the Association Council between the EU and Turkey, a noteworthy fact being that the last meeting of this kind was held in 2019 during the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU," the Romanian official added.In his turn, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stressed the good relations between the two countries in the fields of security and defence, recalling that Romania has purchased military systems from his country, and Turkish aircaft participate in military policing missions in Romanian airspace.
