Minister Burduja signed a letter of intent with Lockheed Martin, a first step in developing battery production technology

March 10, 2024

The minister of energy, Sebastian Burduja signed on the occastion of his visit to the United States of America a letter of intent with Lockheed Martin, the first step towards the development of technology for the production of GridStar Flow batteries (redox flow battery) in Romania.     ‘On the occasion of my visit to the USA, I signed in Boston a letter of intent with Lockheed Martin, American top company in aerospace, military and energy domains. It is the first step for the development of technology for the production of batteries in Romania. And not only batteries, but batteries of the last generation produced by Lockheed Martin, GridStar Flow ( redox flow batteries) an innovative solution for energy storage for utility, commercial, industrial and military applications. It is a cost-effective and efficient long-term technology with an operational lifetime of 20 years and, importantly, it is not dependent on critical raw materials and is environmentally friendly’ the minister wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday.Burduja said that the American company tries to establish strategic partnerships to develop production capacities for GridStar Flow on the markets in the whole world. ‘They chose to explore Romania due to its strategic position, of its production capacity, of the competence of our engineers, but especially as we have the potential to become a European leader in the domain of energy security and long-term energy storage. Everything means well-paid jobs, prestige and value-added exports for Romania. I saw such a storage capacity in batteries near Boston. It works perfectly, at the Lockheed Martin standards. We can develop in our country a production unit to become a single supplier of GridStar flow in the EU and in the region. The batteries storage is more and more important for the national energy system, in the context of increasing the share of intermittent renewable energy production’ explained the minister of energy. He mentioned that starting with the period of his previous mandate as minister of research, innovation and digitization he collaborated with Lockheed Martin, the American company as he started a partnership with the Technical University in Cluj Napoca for the development of solutions based on Artificial Intelligence.    ‘It is the second centre for research-development of Lockheed Martin in the whole world, after the laboratory in Australia’ said Sebastian Burduja on the social media network.
