Infrastructure: Romanian airports ready for Schengen accession, alongside the Border Police

March 11, 2024

The president of the Association of Romanian Airports (AAR), David Ciceo, estimates that traffic in the Schengen area, after March 31, will represent approximately 70% of the total flow of passengers and assures that the airports, both those in Bucharest and the regional ones, will be prepared for the necessary modifications."Romanian airports are collaborating with the General Inspectorate of the Border Police and Customs to adapt passenger flows, so that we are ready for March 31. We estimate that Schengen traffic will be approximately 70%, and non-Schengen traffic 30%. It represents an extraordinary facility for passengers, because 70% will no longer be controlled either at departure or in the destination countries, I mean the Schengen area, and also the necessary documents for minor children in the Schengen area are eliminated in case they are not accompanied by both parents," declared Ciceo in central city of Brasov, on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Association of Romanian Airports. At the same time, he emphasized that the General Inspectorate of the Border Police "is doing very well" regarding the adaptation of the procedures."On the one hand, we (the airports, ed. n..) are responsible, of course also the Border Police, (...) but you should know that they are very good, they have all the necessary equipment," David Ciceo stressed. The annual meeting of the Association of Romanian Airports took place on Thursday and Friday, at Poiana Brasov, addressing the projects financed by the Large Infrastructure Operational Program (POIM) that are being implemented at airports, aspects related to safety and security in airports, the forecasts regarding passenger traffic and the possibility of developing route networks, as well as accession to the Schengen area at the level of air borders, starting from March 31.
