A third of the households in Romania cannot pay their expenses on time

A quarter of the households in Romania had, in 2020 difficulties as regards the payment on time of some expenses, according to an info graph Monitorul Social, a project of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Romania.‘Access to the EU led, in the first years, to the considerable increase of the share of households in Romania with difficulties in payment of the monthly expenses. The largest share of the households not managing monthly expenses was reached in 2014 (37.6%). Later, this share came back to the level before accession. However, the phenomenon is present in a worrying percentage: last year, in 2020, a quarter of the households stated they met difficulties of this type, according to the INS data’ shows the updated info graph about the situation of the households which could not make payment for some expenses on time.According to the quoted source, the rate between prices in Romania and those in the European Union is relatively constant.‘Although the prices are lower than in the EU, for a quarter of the households the income cannot cover the life standard and monthly consumption’ the info graphic says.If 100 is the level of the European average of this year, as regards the level of prices for consumption goods including indirect taxes, last year in Romania this level was 54.8 similar to 2013, while in 2019 the level of 55.2 and in 2018 – 55.7 the highest level since 2009 to the present.The source for the data used in the info graph is the data base Eurostat and the data base of the National Institute for Statistics, says the Foundation Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Romania.
