Acting President Ilie Bolojan sent on Thursday a first message laying out the priorities and goals of his term in office, including the upcoming presidential election, and assuring that "we will have fair and transparent elections.""Dear Romanians, I address this first message to you, fully aware of the extremely important moment Romania is experiencing. I take up this position with dignity and with all responsibility towards Romanians and towards our future, towards all of us," Bolojan wrote in the message released by the Presidential Administration.Bolojan informs that on Wednesday and Thursday he discussed with those responsible and became familiar with the pressing problems and needs in the fields of Defense, Foreign Affairs and National Security, pointing out that all these aspects require adequate solutions and must be approached with seriousness and balance."Throughout my public activity, I have been guided by the firm belief that institutions must work for the people. Even though my mandate is limited and well-defined by the Constitution, I guarantee you that this principle will stay in force. I will act in this position with all dignity and responsibility, fully understanding the opportunities and limits that the position of president implies," Bolojan said, also emphasizing that he has clear priorities and goals for his mandate."First of all - ensuring the country's economic, social and political stability. We have no time to waste, and the risk of us facing a major crisis is real. That is precisely why the cooperation of the entire central and local public administration is needed, for a good governance, and for the citizens to have confidence that the state works to meet their legitimate expectations," he said.Speaking of foreign policy, Bolojan emphasized that "we have a safe, stable country, strongly anchored on its European path. (...) Romania will be well represented abroad, with dignity and seriousness. What will come first is the interest of our nation, so that every citizen feels protected and defended. Romania has constantly proven to its external allies that it is a stable and reliable partner and it is extremely important to continue in the same direction."The acting president points out that the upcoming presidential election is also an important topic."I am sending out an unequivocal message to all Romanians. We will have fair and transparent elections! Voting is the foundation of democracy and ensuring unquestionable elections is a major step for Romanians to regain their trust in institutions. Therefore, I will do everything in my power to ensure that all those responsible contribute with professionalism and good faith to the organization of free and fair elections," he added."For all of us in public service, no matter where we work, there is no alternative but to be at the service of the people, and I expect every institution and every employee to work for the citizens. My goal, as acting president, is to restore trust in public institutions, and at the end of this period to be able to look you in the eye, knowing that I have worked in your interest and convinced that I have acted with integrity, dignity and care for Romanians. May God protect our country and all Romanians, wherever they may be!," the acting president wrote in conclusion.Ilie Bolojan took over on Wednesday as Romania's acting president.
