Agra Asigurări launches the 2026–2027 agricultural season: Increased compensation for farmers and extended protection before sowing

Agra Asigurări, Romania's leading agricultural insurance company, has launched the quotation campaign for the 2026–2027 agricultural season, making its Agrar Basis crop insurance product available to farmers. The launch comes at a time when extreme weather events are affecting Romanian agriculture with increasing frequency. During the previous season, the company issued approximately 8,000 policies across its portfolio of 11 insurance products, with Agrar Basis accounting for the largest share, covering around 1.7 million hectares of agricultural land.

Launching the campaign before the autumn sowing season enables farmers to plan crop protection from the start of the new agricultural year, ensuring that insurance policies take effect before the first weather-related risks emerge. Agrar Basis provides coverage against hail, storms, fire, torrential rain, frost, late spring frost, as well as field-assessed drought for maize crops. In addition, the product includes a re-sowing package designed to protect farmers' investments from the earliest stages of crop development.

The campaign follows an agricultural season in which farmers faced an increasingly diverse range of climate-related risks. While drought had been the main challenge in previous years, the 2025–2026 season was also marked by waterlogging, excess soil moisture, frost episodes in April and May, followed by hailstorms and severe storms beginning in June. In some regions, such as Maramureș and Satu Mare, crops were affected by both hail and moderate to extreme agricultural drought.

"Launching the quotation campaign before sowing begins is no coincidence. Today, crop protection must be planned alongside the farming plan itself, as climate-related risks can arise from the very first stages of the growing cycle. We want farmers to be able to make protection decisions before the first extreme weather event threatens their investment. Agrar Basis has been designed precisely to provide this continuity of protection, from sowing to harvest," said Adrian-Horia Lupu, CEO of Agra Asigurări.

For the new campaign, Agra Asigurări has increased the compensation available under its re-sowing package for drought occurring during the crop emergence stage from RON 1,000/ha to RON 1,200/ha, reflecting rising crop establishment costs and providing farmers with stronger financial support when fields need to be replanted.

Farmers' interest in agricultural insurance continues to grow, although purchasing decisions are increasingly influenced by liquidity pressure and rising agricultural input costs. At the same time, farmers are becoming more selective in assessing which risks to insure and the financial impact that a major loss could have on their farming operations.

"We remain confident about the market's development because the need for protection has become increasingly evident. The growing frequency of extreme weather events and mounting cost pressures on farms will make agricultural insurance an increasingly important component of farm management decisions. At the same time, market development depends on predictability, proper farmer education, and support mechanisms that encourage risk transfer through insurance," added Adrian-Horia Lupu.

In practice, climate-related risks are no longer limited to specific regions or particular crops, but can occur at any stage of the agricultural cycle. In this context, planning crop protection before sowing has become an essential decision for ensuring the continuity of farm operations.

"Over the past few years, we have seen that climate-related risks are no longer isolated events, and farmers increasingly have to manage a combination of extreme weather phenomena, ranging from drought and frost to hail, storms, and excess soil moisture. Based on our field experience, taking out an insurance policy before sowing provides farmers with greater predictability and enables them to protect their investments during the most vulnerable stages of the crop cycle. Under today's conditions, agricultural insurance has become an essential part of farm management," said Dragoș Dancă, Regional Manager for Central and Northern Romania at Agra Asigurări.

The re-sowing package is designed for situations where crops are severely damaged during the early stages of development and, subject to the policy terms and conditions, may cover risks such as drought during crop emergence, soil crusting, soil erosion caused by heavy rainfall, specific pests, frost associated with late-winter drought, as well as damage caused by waterlogging or excess soil moisture.

The package may be used when one of the covered risks affects the insured crop to such an extent that it requires plowing under and re-sowing. In such cases, farmers must notify the insurer of the loss within no more than four days from the occurrence or discovery of the event, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the insurance policy.

To benefit from this protection, farmers must observe the underwriting deadlines: August 31 for rapeseed and September 30 for winter cereal crops.

The quotation process is fully digitalized, and under standard circumstances, a quotation can be generated within minutes. Once the quotation has been accepted and the required documentation submitted, the policy is typically issued within approximately 48 hours. Farmers can request quotations either through Agra Asigurări's distribution partners or directly from the company's regional managers.
