Agriculture: Autumn wheat crop affected by drought in Moldova, Dobrogea, Oltenia and Muntenia and locally in Transylvania

May 21, 2024

The autumn wheat crop is affected by moderate and severe soil drought in Moldova, Dobrogea, Oltenia and Muntenia, as well as locally in eastern and southern Transylvania, according to an analysis by the National Meteorological Administration (ANM).   In contrast, soil moisture reserves are within satisfactory and close to optimal limits in Maramures, Crisana and Banat, most of Transylvania, locally in northern and southern Oltenia, northern, north-western, western, southern and eastern Muntenia and, isolated, in eastern Moldova and Dobrogea. Farmers in Prahova county say that, at this time, the situation of wheat crops is critical due to drought and demand the abolition of the anti-hail system, which they claim does not actually protect against hail and, moreover, would encourage drought.Farmers in Arad are also complaining about the drought exacerbated by unusually high temperatures lately and say that autumn crops such as wheat, barley and oilseed rape have matured prematurely because of the heat, but are underdeveloped due to lack of water in the soil.   Similarly, the southern part of Vaslui County is experiencing a severe soil drought, while the northern part is experiencing moderate drought, according to data provided by representatives of the Vaslui County Department of Agriculture (DAJ). Due to the major water deficit in the soil, problems are reported in wheat, rape, barley or barley crops, established last autumn, and some farmers have already turned back the crops due to uneven sprouting.
