The cultivated land in Romania increased in 2025 nationwide by 40,000 hectares from 2024, reaching 8.214 million hectares, with the majority private sector having a share of 99.1%, or 8.139 million hectares, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).The counties that hold the most important shares in the total cultivated area are: Teleorman (6.0%), Dolj (5.9%), Timis (5.2%), Constanta (5.1%), Calarasi (5.0%).As against the previous year, the cultivated areas were higher for oily plants, potatoes - total, active vineyards, cereals for grains, active orchards, tobacco and smaller for vegetables - green fodder from arable land, legumes for grains and sugar beets.According to INS, in 2025, the harvested area decreased by 79,100 ha from the cultivated area. Compared with the previous year, the harvested areas increased for oily plants, cereals for grains, potatoes - total, active vineyards, active orchards tobacco - and decreased for vegetables - sugar beets, green fodder from arable land and legumes for grains.At the level of the European Union, the most important crops on arable land are cereals, with the largest shares held by wheat (47.9% of the total area cultivated under cereals), barley (20.1%) and maize (17.1%).Other crops with a high share at the level of the European Union are oily plants and potatoes. Vegetables and fruits have become increasingly important, especially for the consumption of the population, both fresh and preserved.In 2025 as against 2024, there were increases in the cultivated areas of potatoes (+7.4%), rapeseed (+5.9%) and wheat (+5.3%) at the level of the European Union.
