Romania's forest area increased by 170 hectares in 2025 compared with the previous year, while the area regenerated declined by 10.1%, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS)."The national forest fund stood 170 hectares higher as of 31 December 2025. This increase was mainly due to the reclassification of wooded pastures and the incorporation into the forest fund of degraded land and non-forested land designated for afforestation under the provisions of Law No. 331/2024 on the Forestry Code," the INS said in a press release.At the same time, forests accounted for 97.6% of the national forest fund, while the volume of timber harvested increased by 4.1% in 2025 compared with 2024.The distribution of the forest fund by development region shows a significant concentration in the Centre region (19.2% of the total forest fund) and the North-East region (18.2%), followed by the West (16.2%), North-West (15.3%), South-West Oltenia (12.4%), South-Muntenia (10.0%), South-East (8.3%) and Bucharest-Ilfov (0.4%).The largest volume of timber was harvested in the North-East region (28.3% of the total volume harvested), followed by the Centre region (22.9%), with smaller shares recorded in the West (12.8%), North-West (11.9%), South-Muntenia (9.4%), South-West Oltenia (7.5%), South-East (6.9%) and Bucharest-Ilfov (0.3%).The largest areas where forest regeneration works were carried out were recorded in the North-East region (19.5% of the total regenerated area), the Centre region (17.1%), the West (15.0%) and the North-West (15.0%), followed by the South-East (11.8%), South-Muntenia (10.9%), South-West Oltenia (10.5%) and Bucharest-Ilfov (0.2%).
