Agriculture: Romania will not limit wheat exports

April 6, 2022

Romania has no plans to limit cereal exports, despite several countries in the region doing so in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, euractiv.com reads.   Exports from Russia and Ukraine, which account for 30% of the wheat trade, have practically stopped, raising fears of food inflation and hunger. But Romania, a major supplier of grains, does not plan to halt exports, at least for now.   ”Traditionally, we are an exporting country because we produce more than we consume,” agriculture minister Adrian Chesnoiu said Monday (7 March). Last year, Romanian farmers harvested more than 11 million tons of wheat, while the country’s consumption is lower than 4.5 million tons.   However, other countries in the region, such as Hungary and Bulgaria, restricted exports of farming products due to concerns raised by the conflict in Ukraine. Chesnoiu said that the assessments made by the ministry show that there is no risk that the local population cannot be supplied and the country has enough reserves. But the minister said restrictions could be later enforced if the situation changes.   But, for now, Romania, which had its best agricultural year in 2021, seems poised to take advantage of the record high prices on the grain market.
