The area of forests increased by 2,271 hectares last year compared to the previous year, while the regenerated area decreased 4%, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Friday."As of December 31, 2024, the national forest fund recorded an increase of 1,263 hectares. This increase is mainly due to the reclassification of afforested pastures and the inclusion in the forest fund of degraded and non-forested lands designated for afforestation in accordance with the law (Law no. 133/2015 amending and supplementing Law no. 46/2008 - the Forestry Code). Forests represent 97.7% of the national forest fund. The volume of harvested timber decreased by 2.8% in 2024 compared to 2023," the INS said in a press release.The largest volume of harvested timber was recorded in the North-East development region (28.4% of the total harvested timber), followed by the Central region (25.3%), and to a lesser extent by the West (11.9%), North-West (11.6%), South-Muntenia (9.1%), South-West Oltenia (7%), South-East (6.4%), and Bucharest-Ilfov (0.3%) regions.The largest areas of forest regeneration work were carried out in the North-East region (20.6% of the total regenerated area), followed by Central (19%) and South-East (13.7%) regions, and then North-West (13.6%), South-West Oltenia (11.7%), West (11.6%), South-Muntenia (9.2%), and Bucharest-Ilfov (0.6%).
