The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) has set its target for the European Parliament elections, hoping to score over 15 percent of the votes, a score that would give the party 6 seats in the European Parliament. Two women – Renate Weber  and Norica Nicolai – will be on the top three places on the party list, Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated on Saturday. The leader of ALDE stated during a press conference in Poiana Brasov that the objective is to win over 15 percent of the votes in the European Parliament elections of 2019, and six seats in the European Parliament. “We plan over 15 percent and six members in the European Parliament. (…) We start off with the women – without there being a decision adopted at the level of the party, but I can tell you that I’ll support my point of view. I hope as many colleagues as possible will embrace it. Two of our colleagues will be on places no.1 and no.3, one of them is present here, Ms [Renate] Weber, and the other is Ms [Norica] Nicolai,” Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated. Asked whether ALDE will have its own candidate in the presidential elections, Tariceanu said: “I don’t know, we’ll see. There’s a long time to go, but we have some thoughts, but we’ll discuss some more.” ALDE President Calin Popescu Tariceanu, ALDE Secretary General Daniel Chitoiu and Liberal Democrat Women’s Branch (OFLDE) President Gratiela Gavrilescu took part in the ‘The political career of ALDE women’ event organised in Poiana Brasov by MEP Renate Weber with the support of European Parliament’s ALDE Group. The debates focused on woman’s role in society and politics, and on the opportunities and challenges facing ALDE’s female members. The event took place on November 17-18.   Renate Weber harshly criticises EP resolution and CVM report: Superficial documents   ALDE MEP Renate Weber stated on Saturday, in Poiana Brasov, that the resolution adopted by the European Parliament and the CVM repot are “superficial documents,” believing that they are “not just biased but actually fundamentally wrong.” MEP Renate Weber stated on Saturday during a press conference in Poiana Brasov that she has analysed the resolution that the European Parliament adopted against Romania, but also the CVM, deeming that the two documents are “superficial.” “Unfortunately, both the resolution adopted by the European Parliament and the CVM report are superficial documents. Even though at the level of the European Commission normally there are delegations that come to the country, that receive information, that meet all kinds of partners from the country, the presentations we have seen in this report are not only biased, they actually are fundamentally wrong,” Weber said. She pointed out that the Superior Council of the Magistracy (CSM) is criticised “because they didn’t appoint a certain person at the Criminal Section of the High Court of Cassation and Justice.” “The CSM has pointed out that it is its exclusive prerogative, a legal prerogative in Romania, not shared with the European Commission. We must come to our senses a bit, see how the law and the Constitution are being enforced in our country. We are also asked – actually I have never seen this before – not to enforce the judicial laws. Forgive me, but only some juridically illiterate persons could ask something like that, because not enforcing a legislation that is in force now would mean chaos. So, these aren’t feasible recommendations,” Renate Weber added. The MEP pointed out that the judicial laws deprive the Justice Minister of the possibility to exercise the disciplinary action, something that the CSM has also explained, and that is why she believes someone is “programmatically misinforming the European Commission.” “I believe someone is programmatically misinforming the European Commission and then, based on disinformation, such reports appear. I’m sad to say that I too had expectations from this cooperation and verification mechanism at first. When we talk about the judicial laws, we talk about all three laws. In my view, what was clear before should have been corrected. Moreover, please don’t forget that they’ve went through all mechanisms of internal oversight, they were sent to the Constitutional Court several times, they were revised, after that the President sent them back to Parliament, sent them to the Constitutional Court. So, they went through all internal mechanisms. There was a problem, if you recall, that we also find in the Venice Commission report: the one concerning the setting up of a special section for investigating magistrates. You’ve noticed that documents have come to light, showing that in 2013-2018 around a third of the CSM had dossiers opened at the DNA. The same CSM that had to investigate and had to have the last say in disciplinary actions concerning precisely the head of the DNA and her subordinates. Well, it’s a huge conflict of interest and, as lawmaker, you have the obligation to find a mechanism to avoid such a conflict of interest in the future. I believe a specialised section that works within the Public Ministry is a solution,” Renate Weber added.
