The annual inflation rate stagnated in April at 4.9%, and the most significant price increases, 6.83%, were recorded in the services sector, followed by rises in foodstuff prices by 5.57% and in non-food prices by 3.53%, shows data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).By categories, the services sector recorded the most significant price increases: the interurban transport has become the most expensive in the last year, with an increase in fares of 16.92%, followed by hygiene and cosmetics - with a 13.8% price increase and water, sewerage, sanitation - plus 12.36%. Telephone services registered price decreases of 4.75%.In the foodstuffs sector, in the last year, the products to see the highest price increases were fresh fruit, of 12.28%, edible oil - 9.93% and cocoa and coffee - 9.26%. Price decreases were posted for sugar - 6% and potatoes - 4.38%.As regards non-food goods, thermal energy prices have increased by 13.63% (April 2025 compared to April 2024), prices of books, newspapers and magazines by 7.28% and prices of knitwear by 7.22%. On the other hand, gas has become cheaper, with prices lower by 3.67%, while fuel prices have decreased by 0.18%.The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has revised upwards its inflation forecast for the end of 2025 to 3.8% from 3.5% previously and expects it to reach 3.1% by the end of 2026, according to data presented in February by BNR governor Mugur Isarescu.
