Banca Transilvania, in collaboration with Visa, has completed its first payment initiated by an AI agent on behalf of a customer, at a partner merchant, as part of a pilot phase of Europe's emerging AI-assisted commerce.According to the bank, the initiative is part of Visa's Agentic Ready programme. The payment used real card data and existing merchant infrastructure, showing how AI agents can safely complete purchases for consumers while relying on today's payment rails.Romania is among the CEE markets where AI-based travel planning is already common: about two-thirds of Romanians use AI tools to organise holidays, and the country has the highest share of users generating itineraries with AI (31%).As these technologies advance, the payments industry is exploring how a digital assistant could securely execute a transaction on a user's behalf, with full consent and control. The pilot demonstrates how AI-initiated payments can work in everyday shopping contexts while preserving client consent, issuer controls and existing protections.Oana Ilas, Deputy CEO Retail Banking at Banca Transilvania, said the collaboration helps shape "the next stage of the payments ecosystem, where AI agents can make payments for customers using infrastructure that already ensures scalability, security and control".The AI-initiated payment was carried out through the Visa Intelligent Commerce platform.Elena Ungureanu, Visa's country manager for Romania, said AI agents have proven they can initiate payments in real environments, and Visa's role is to ensure "every payment remains safe, transparent and trustworthy", connecting banks, merchants and AI systems through its network.
