Bill on changing date of election of president of Romania, adopted by Chamber of Deputies

April 4, 2024

Deputies adopted on Tuesday a bill initiated by the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) to change the date of elections for the president of Romania. There were 183 votes "in favour", 84 "against" and one abstention. The bill aims to amend Art. 5 paragraph (1) of Law no. 370/2004, so that elections for the president of Romania are held no later than three months before the month in which the term of office of the president expires."Election day is Sunday. Elections shall be held no later than three months before the month in which the president's term of office expires. At least 75 days before the voting day, the Government shall set the date of the elections by decision," an amendment states. The leader of the Save Romania Union (USR) deputies, Ionut Mosteanu, asked for the bill to be sent back to the select committees, arguing, among other things, that the election of the president is a very important aspect of democracy and "it is not acceptable for this bill to stay two days in the Chamber of Deputies", as it needs to be debated. The proposal was rejected by the plenary, with 51 votes in favour and 95 against."The red PSD [Social Democratic Party] and the yellow PSD [National Liberal Party] have joined hands to trample on democracy. You are amending electoral laws in an election year," Mosteanu said. The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) deputy Georgel Badiu accused that "the rules are being changed during the game". "Gentlemen from the PSD, PNL, UDMR, you are cheating politically, you seek to use both Parliament, the Government and the CCR [the Constitutional Court of Romania] in the interest of your own cliques. It is unacceptable to change the rules during the game," Badiu said.According to MP Ludovic Orban, "there is a lack of democracy and respect for citizens". He invited the Liberals not to vote for this bill.PSD MP Oana Florea told the "astonished right" that they will be "astonished when they see the result of the elections".The bill was previously adopted by the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies being the decision-making body in this case.
