BNR warns of a deepfake campaign that uses the image and voice of Governor Mugur Isarescu

March 4, 2024

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) warns that, recently, deepfake images have been posted on several social networks in which the image and voice of Governor Mugur Isarescu are used.   “Recently, on several platforms and social networks, there have been deepfake posts involving the governor of the National Bank of Romania, Mugur Isarescu. The videos fraudulently use the image and voice of the BNR governor to convince the public to make financial investments on a non-existent platform,” reads a statement from the BNR.   The National Bank of Romania warns that it does not make investment recommendations and proposals. “If you have followed such false ads, immediately report these situations to the competent authorities,” the statement also says.   Deepfake, according to the bill on the responsible use of technology, is any falsified image, audio and/or video content created with the help of artificial intelligence, so as to create the appearance that a person said or did things that they did not gave consent, which in reality were not said or done by that person.
