Bolojan: If the motion does not pass, the government will continue to operate as usual

May 20, 2026

The motion of censure entitled “STOP the “Bolojan Plan” to destroy the economy, impoverish the population and fraudulently sell state assets”, submitted by the parliamentary groups of PSD, AUR and PACE – Romania First, was presented on Wednesday in the reunified plenary of Parliament. Neither Ilie Bolojan nor Sorin Grindeanu were present at the meeting. The text of the motion was read by the leader of the AUR senators Petrisor Peiu. The debate and vote will take place on May 5.   Premier Ilie Bolojan, the liberal (PNL) leader stated on Friday that, in case the no-confidence motion is not voted in the Parliament, the government will work in normal conditions, but there will be need for parliamentary consultations to find a stable support formulat taking into consideration that Romania has some priorities to cover during the period to come.He explained that the most important short term priorities are connected to accessing the PNRR funds, conditioned by meeting the reform targets assumed by Romania where there is need for parliamentary support to adopt some laws, and on the other hand, the finalization of the investments until the end of August, in order to absorb the money effectively. When referring to the variant when the no-confidence motion is voted in the parliament, he showed that the standard constitutional procedure will be applied."The parties will participate in consultations with the President of Romania, will be able to make proposals, and the President of Romania, after reviewing the proposals, will entrust a prime minister with the task of forming the government. This is the standard procedure provided for in the Constitution," Bolojan said.   Ilie Bolojan, president of the PNL, also stated that if the motion of no confidence against the government passes, the issue of whether he will remain as party leader will be discussed internally by the Liberal leadership, emphasizing that the National Liberal Party has a president elected by the party congress and that there are no issues whatsoever regarding this matter.
