Bulgaria introduces border controls with Romania for six months, starting January 1

January 16, 2025

The Council of Ministers in Sofia adopted on Wednesday a decision on the temporary introduction of controls at the Bulgarian-Romanian internal border and the suspension of the operation of border crossing points at the Bulgarian-Romanian and Bulgarian-Greek internal borders, a decision prior to the actual accession to Schengen with land borders, which was agreed with Romania, Hungary and Austria on November 22, in Budapest, informs the BTA agency.   The decision aims to ensure the implementation of the Quadripartite Declaration between Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania, agreed on 22 November this year in Budapest, as well as the (European) Council Decision on setting the date for the lifting of checks on persons at internal land borders with and between the Republic of Bulgaria and Romania, BTA states.   In accordance with the Quadripartite Budapest Declaration, in order to prevent possible security threats generated by a change in migration patterns, which could arise as an immediate consequence of the absence of internal border controls, border controls will be carried out at border crossing points at the internal border with Romania for a period of six months starting from 1 January 2025, after which they will be suspended.   On 12 December, the Council of the European Union decided that Romania and Bulgaria will also join Schengen with their land borders from 1 January next year, which means that Romania and Bulgaria will become external borders for the Schengen area.  (Photo:https://www.politiadefrontiera.ro/)
