The air forces of Bulgaria, Romania and Spain have signed a trilateral technical agreement enabling cross-border NATO air-policing missions, Bulgaria's Ministry of Defence said on Thursday in a statement, cited by EFE.According to the announcement, the arrangement builds on a 2021 bilateral agreement between Romania and Bulgaria that allows fighter aircraft from a third country - in this case Spain - to take part in air-policing operations.Under NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS), Spanish Air Force jets will conduct air-patrol missions in Romanian airspace, where they are currently deployed, and, if required, also in the Bulgarian airspace, the Bulgarian Defence Ministry explained.Joint air-surveillance missions with other NATO members are part of the Alliance's mechanisms to ensure the security of the airspace of eastern-flank countries near Ukraine.This cooperation strengthens coordination in air and missile defence among Allies and reinforces collective-defence capabilities, the Bulgarian ministry added.
