Chief of Defence Staff: Romania has very good air surveillance system

August 22, 2024

Romania has a "very good" anti-aircraft surveillance system, and the Russian-made drone debris found in Romania is, most likely, the result of the actions of the Ukrainian armed forces, the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Gheorghita Vlad said on Thursday in Constanta."We have a very good surveillance system, I believe. The proximity of the conflict zone can also generate such risks. Most likely, but I don't want to speculate, these are fragments of drones that were downed by the Ukrainian anti-aircraft defence," said the chief of Defence Staff (SMAp).According to the procedure, he detailed, the drone debris is currently being analyzed. "If debris found, we need to know their origin - from a chemical point of view, from a spectral point of view, so as to make sure that there is no danger neither for the population, nor for the environment, nor for anyone," explained Vlad.As to the destruction of some Russian drones that enter the territory of Romania, the head of the SMAp said: "We have the air policing service and this is the mission of the air policing service."Fragments of a Russian drone were found near the town of Plauru, after the attacks from Tuesday night to Wednesday on the civil and port infrastructure in Ukraine, near the border with Romania, the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) reported on Thursday. The investigations carried out by relevant specialists began on Wednesday."Until this moment, at the first of the three locations identified as possible areas of incidence, in the vicinity of Plauru, Tulcea county, fragments from a Geran1/2 Russian drone was identified. Search will continue today, to cover the entire area. We make it clear that all the locations identified as possible incidence areas are outside the inhabited areas, with no infrastructure elements being affected," said MApN.
