Cristian Pirvulescu: Donald Trump's second term - a radical change of direction

February 19, 2025

The political analyst Cristian Pirvulescu states that Donald Trump’s second term which he starts on Monday  means a radical change of direction. He says that through his statements, Donald Trump seems to ‘validate Russian and Chinese neo-imperialism, trying to drag the United States into a global whirlwind from which it can emerge victorious’. On the one hand, says the analyst, Trum has announced that he is preparing about 100 executive orders for the first day of his presidency, so as to destroy the legacy of the Biden administration.‘How tough will this blow be we will see, but many believe that the United States will go into a new era. Among other things, 100 executive orders will be regarding migration, probably the most important measure expected by the MAGA supporters, but also the measures regarding the overturning the Biden administration’s climate agenda. But the executive orders are rather a symbol, and not a policy. Executive orders cannot change a law or a regulation, but for Trump this does not seem to be important. But the executive orders will exceed the legal framework, they will be annulled in the court. But the message regarding the total change of policy will have been given’ Pirvulescu said.Cristian Pirvulescu considers that the new American president will try to change the direction as soon as possible.'With an obedient Congress, even if the majority in the House of Representatives is only four votes and there is still a minority of old Republicans in the Senate, and a Supreme Court dominated by conservatives - of the nine justices, six are conservative, three of them Trump's first-term appointees - the new US president will try to change direction as quickly as he can. And compared to his previous term in office, there will be no members of his team who will be able to moderate decisions and resist excesses. A veritable court seems to be in place in Washington. There will be four years - of which the first two, until the mid-term elections, will be without strong opposition - in which Trump and Musk will try to transform America from a liberal democracy, as it has been permanently since declaring its independence, into an uninhibited capitalist state', Pirvulescu detailed. The political analyst noted, however, that the neo-imperialist tendencies associated with MAGA conservatism and uninhibited Musk-style libertarianism are, by their very nature, at odds with each other, and this contradiction risks becoming the main problem for the new administration in Washington. According to professor Pirvulescu, Donald Trump is not in disagreement with other states because he wants to act unilaterally, but because he wants to impose his own way.'For this, as he did in his first mandate, he will try to introduce penalties against all those who - urbi et orbi - disagree with him,' the political analyst said.   Cristian Pirvulescu also said that domestically Donald Trump will try not only to silence liberals, but also to turn liberalism into a relic, and externally he will impose the position that 'only Americans would have the right to set international rules'. Professor Pirvulescu said that Romania cannot have different interests from the Euroepean ones. ‘Any isolationist and unilateral approach concerning the US will have consequences on the position of our country in the European concert. And Romania has already a consolidated partnership with the US’ , he said. (Photo:https://ro.usembassy.gov/ro/)
