Cumulative turnover of Romanian business milieu more than triples between 2008 and 2024

December 11, 2025

The cumulative turnover achieved by companies in Romania more than tripled between 2008 and 2024, rising from 857 billion RON to 2,677 billion RON, net profits multiplied 4.5 times to 229 billion RON, and the profit-to-loss ratio reached over 4 RON in profit for every 1 RON in loss, shows a study conducted by Termene.ro. Despite a recent deceleration, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) has consistently stayed above 7%, the cited source said. The report highlights this period as the most significant phase of transformation in the history of Romanian business."The data reveals an undeniable truth: Romania's business environment has reached a stage of maturity. We now have more active companies, over three times the turnover, four times the profits, and significantly greater efficiency compared to fifteen years ago. This demonstrates not only resilience in the face of past crises, but a strengthened and evolving economic landscape. However, this progress alone does not justify the continued emergence of new obstacles," stated Ionut Bonoiu, Head of Context & Clarity at Termene.ro.One of the most important conclusions of the study is that this transformation occurred without a significant increase in the number of employees, as the total number of employees in Romanian companies remained relatively constant during the analyzed period, at around 4.1 million.Labor productivity (turnover per employee) increased almost threefold, and the net profit per employee multiplied more than fourfold - a clear sign that Romanian companies have grown through optimization, digitalization and professionalization. The number of active companies that have filed a balance sheet increased by 65% between 2008 and 2024, exceeding the threshold of 900,000 in 2023. At the same time, the share of companies that actually generate income (turnover of at least 1 RON) rose from 33% in 2008 to 77% in 2024 - a key indicator of the maturing business environment. The segment of companies with turnover of over one million RON almost tripled, reaching 149,000 entities.Between 2008 and 2024, the gross profit increased 4.4 times, reaching 264.5 billion RON, while net profit rose 4.5 times to 229.1 billion RON. In contrast, total reported losses grew by only 50% over the same period, indicating a significant improvement in overall business efficiency. The analysis conducted by Termene.ro is based on official financial data submitted by Romanian companies to the Ministry of Finance. It covers all active companies that filed financial statements during the 2008 - 2024 period and reflects one of the most transformative phases in the history of Romanian business. As of November 1, 2025, the number of companies that had submitted their 2024 financial statements was approximately 7% lower than in 2023, due to delays in publication by several entities - including large firms - on the Ministry of Finance website.Termene.ro is a leading business intelligence platform in Romania, serving over 130,000 professionals and more than 6,000 subscribed companies.
