Daianu : Romania needs NATO, the European Union and partnership with the US

December 23, 2021

Romania needs NATO, the European Union and partnership with the US stated recently Daniel Daianu, chairman of the Fiscal Council in a specialty conference.‘I don’t believe in a new world order. It could be judged in a very simplistic way. Which are the rules? This is the question. Which are the rules? As we had the rules of the Cold War. There are rules and you should have rules as it is necessary to supply public goods in the global space. You have to do it at global level. The climatic changes need cooperation, collaboration. So which is the share of confrontation and collaboration? When referring to Romania, there are some statements. You need options in diplomacy and  foreign policy, even if you think that you can be creative. You can have diplomacy in all  parts of the world, meaning in fact seeing and choosing. So Romania needs NATO and the European Union. You see, even in our debate there is no European Union (…).The EU might have some weaknesses, but we are here. We cannot ignore it. We need the European Union and NATO and partnership with the US’ said Daniel Daianu at the conference ‘ The 3rd world order’ organized by Oxygen events together with the Institute for Political Science and International Relations of the Romanian Academy.   He also said that Romania has a very complicated geographical position. “ It is not advantageous as some would say, as they show the strategic values of Romania. No, I would rather have a different geographical position, which could protect us better. We have a peripheral position in the EU, from different reasons. We have limited robustness, as the pandemics show in several regards. We have a fragile public  budget, which does not allow us to supply basic goods to the citizens of Romania and we cannot acquire things strategically. Even when the partners offer support, you need adequate internal resources. Public educational system and a system of medical assistance in chronic subfinancing. They all show fragility, vulnerability of the economy and of the society’Daniel Daianu said.   He also mentioned that Romania has very weak industrial policies, a waste of the public money and disadvantageous demography, we are not in the euro zone and not in the Schengen Space.
