March 11, 2025

Spain's firm commitment to Romania's security is reflected by its active participation in NATO missions in our country, Defence Minister Angel Tilvar said on Wednesday, when he met with his Spanish counterpart Margarita Robles Fernandez at the 57th Air Base "Captain Aviator Constantin Cantacuzino" at Mihail Kogalniceanu.According to a MApN press release, the two officials expressed their appreciation for the level of cooperation between the armies of the two countries, which has seen an upward trend in recent times, both in bilateral and allied format, in the context of the strategic partnership between Romania and the Kingdom of Spain. The defence ministers also discussed the current security situation, the strengthening of the allied posture on the Eastern Flank of the Alliance and the multinational structures to which the two countries belong, as well as the evolving security situation in the Black Sea region.Spain's engagement in our region is "clear proof of the cohesion and strength of our alliance", minister Tilvar said."We continue to develop bilateral cooperation in order to respond effectively to current and future defence challenges," the Romanian minister added. The two officials emphasized the need to coordinate efforts to ensure stability and security on NATO's Eastern Flank, given the developments of the war in Ukraine, while indicating the need to continue to support vulnerable partners in this region. The importance of the omnidirectional approach to threats to Alliance security was also emphasized, with ministers discussing both stability in NATO's southern neighborhood and the need for dialogue with partners in the South."Spain is an essential pillar and an important contributor to European security, reflecting a deep and correct understanding of the security challenges in the East. At the same time, Romania recognizes and shares the concerns related to the challenges in the South, thus strengthening the strategic vision and unity at the allied level," the Romanian minister of National Defence said.In the framework of the operational commitments carried out under the aegis of the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) of the European Union, Defence ministers Angel Tilvar and Margarita Robles Fernandez highlighted the good cooperation between the Romanian and Spanish armed forces in missions and operations, with emphasis on the naval operation EUNAVFOR ATALANTA, where Spain ensures the Operations Command, and the EU training mission in the Central African Republic (EUTM RCA).
