DefMin Tilvar, Japanese ambassador discuss defence collaboration, support for Ukraine

National Defence Minister Angel Tilvar met on Tuesday at the National Defence Ministry (MApN) headquarters with Japanese ambassador in Bucharest Hiroshi Ueda, who is at the end of his mandate in Romania, with discussions including the support to Ukraine and the Russian attacks near Romania.According to a MApN press release sent on Tuesday, Mr Tilvar and Mr Ueda discussed the impact of the Russian Federation's war of aggression in Ukraine on regional security, focusing on the security situation in the Black Sea, including from the perspective of attacks on Ukrainian river ports near Romania's borders.They also discussed "relevant aspects of support to Ukraine" and the stage of bilateral military cooperation projects. In this context, Minister Tilvar appreciated the advanced stage of bilateral discussions on the establishment of an appropriate legal framework for cooperation in the area of defence, allowing the development of joint projects in several areas of interest. He said that the conclusion of this agreement is a priority for the Ministry of Defence."Japan is a partner state with which we share common visions and I appreciate the upward trend of bilateral relations in the area of defence. We continue to work together, including in the cooperation formats established at NATO and EU level to promote and ensure a security architecture based on respect for international norms," the minister is quoted in the press release as saying.The agenda of the meeting included discussions on increasing the level of cooperation in defence between the two countries, especially in the context of significant developments in the past year. Also highlighted were the first visit of the Japanese Vice Minister of Defence to Romania and the participation, for the first time, of the Romanian military in a cyber defence exercise (Cyber Kongo 2023) organised by Japan.During the meeting, the Romanian official sent condolences for the loss of human lives caused by the earthquake and the plane crash in Japan earlier this year.
