Deloitte Romania assisted pro bono the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee in the creation of training modules on sports’ sustainable transformation which will be accessed by dozens of specialized entities in Europe

December 14, 2023

Deloitte Romania assisted the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR) in the effort of adopting sustainability practices in sports, by creating training modules (e-learning) that will guide dozens of federations, clubs, sponsors and other stakeholders in the field of Olympic sports in Europe in the implementation of strategies to reduce the environmental footprint of sports events, especially by reducing the carbon emissions associated with them. Deloitte's support came in the context of the Green Flame project, financed through the Erasmus+ Program by the European Commission, in which the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee is a partner, alongside the Portuguese Olympic Committee and non-governmental entities such as European Network for Innovation and Knowledge (EUNIK), CuiCui Studios and Sport Evolution Alliance (SEA), under the coordination of the Spanish Olympic Committee.
Deloitte Romania got involved in the project following an invitation from COSR, by developing, as a pro bono contribution, the training modules on the identification and measurement of the sustainability impact, the carbon footprint - understanding, measurement, and reduction strategies -, and respectively “green” supply. The modules created by Deloitte Romania’s team of experts also offer several recommendations regarding the prioritization of different actions.
“We were honoured by the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee’s invitation to contribute with our expertise to this large and impactful project for the Olympic community and for sports in general. The fact that sport, as a universal field, essential for the balance of individuals and societies, but also as a global industry with impressive annual figures, is aware of its environmental footprint and actively works to reduce it is an important signal of responsibility, which can set the tone for a commitment on a larger scale. We want to continue to contribute to this effort, in line with the global policy of Deloitte, which is a Global Partner of the International Olympic Committee for the next decade, with the belief that the world of sport and business can share best practices with each other in the race to achieve their goals, including sustainability-related objectives,” stated Sorin Elisei, Director, Deloitte Romania, Leader of Sustainability Practice.
The training modules created by Deloitte and COSR were recently launched in Bucharest, together with the Sport Go Green app, also developed within the Green Flame program, which will allow the organizers of sporting events to measure and compare the level of carbon emissions in various stages of the preparation and running of the competitions.
“We would like to thank Deloitte Romania, which, through its vast experience and commitment to sustainability, was a reliable partner in every stage of this project not only for us, but also for the entire consortium. Our collaboration resulted in the successful completion of the training materials allocated to COSR in the Green Flame Project. The Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee and Deloitte Romania demonstrate that sport and sustainability are interdependent. Deloitte Romania is COSR's partner in terms of sustainability and has developed for us a series of measures to be implemented until 2025, and some of them have already been initiated,” stated Florin Mișcă, Deputy General Secretary of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee.
Deloitte is a Global Partner of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and a Global Olympic Partner until 2032, contributing in this capacity to improving and securing the digital ecosystem of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as well as managing aspects related to strategy, corporate governance, sustainability, diversity and inclusion associated with the Olympic community and events.
