Deputy PM Birchall meets British Trade Commissioner for Europe; discusses Romanian community in UK

November 19, 2018

Deputy PM Ana Birchall on Monday met with the British Trade Commissioner for Europe Andrew Mitchell, with whom she discussed about the Romanian community in the UK and the fact that Romania will support the UK in remaining close with the EU even after Brexit. “We discussed on topics of a priority interest on the bilateral agenda – updating, further developing and strengthening the Strategic Partnership existing between Romania and the UK, by adjusting to the new European realities in the Brexit context. Moreover, we established that strengthening and consolidating the economic relations between Romania and the UK are our common priorities,” Birchall wrote on her Facebook page. During the talks, the Deputy PM highlighted the importance of the Strategic Partnership with the UK, “a partnership that has kept our countries united for 15 years already, with a strong foundation existing in the security, economic, cultural and educational fields.” “I underscored that Romania will continue to support the UK in remaining as closer to the European Union, after the Brexit, as possible,” added the Deputy PM, in what concerns the implementation of Romania’s strategic partnerships. Birchall also remarked that “Romania has an important community in the UK, which is well integrated with the British society, functioning as a true bridge between the two states.” “Which is precisely why, during the talks, I underscored the absolute need for the human rights of Romanians living in the UK and their families to be respected,” Ana Birchall said. The Deputy PM stated that trade exchanges between Romania and the UK have reached a historic level last year. “However, I believe there still is unexploited potential, which could bring mutual gains to both states,” said Birchall.
