Deputy Premier Catalin Predoiu meets US charge d'affaires a.i.: Border safety and illegal migration on talks agenda

August 6, 2025

Deputy premier Catalin Predoiu, the minister of internal affairs, had a meeting with Michale Dickerson, charge d'affaires a.i. of the US Embassy in Romania. The two officials reviewed the main topics of the bilateral cooperation as well as prospects of consolidating it, laying stress on border safety, fighting cross border organized crime and illegal migration.   According to a press release of the Interior Ministry, issued on Tuesday, in the context of the new migration policies adopted by the US, “the Ministry of Internal Affairs responsibly carries out its attributions in implementing return decisions issued by American authorities in the case of Romanian citizens illegally living in the US.” Minister Predoiu pointed out that the US represent Romania's main strategic partner and a trustworthy ally, while cooperation with law abiding agencies in the US is carried out with very good results.   “Today I had a new meeting and very good discussion with Michael Dickerson, the charge d'affaires a.i. Of the US Embassy to Bucharest, in which we approached cooperation matters in the security and economic fields. Consolidating the partnership with the United States in these sectors represents a strategic partnership for Romania's national security. The Interior Ministry is carrying out concrete cooperation actions with the US in fighting organized crime, drug trafficking and illegal migraton,” said Predoiu, quoted by a press release.   According to him, the recently set up Transfrontier Criminal Investigation Unit is working, and American partners are satisfied to see that it proves efficient and useful in fighting transfrontie crime and orgnized crime.”   “Growing American investments in Romania have a double effect: conslidating national economy and the country's security level, because any direct American investment in Romania' s economy is for us an indirect investment in our security level. Personally, as interior minister and deputy premier with attributions in the field of national security, I will continue to act in both directions: consolidating security cooperation with the US and attracting more direct American investments in our national economy,” Predoiu pointed out.
