Digital project dedicated to the Greater Union Centennial: “Virtual Museum of Union”- images, documents, testimonies about 1918 event

November 20, 2018

The National History Museum of Romania will launch this week the “Virtual Museum of the Union”, a digital project dedicated to the Centennial of the Greater Union, featuring images, documents and other original testimonies from public and private collections, related to the event occurred 100 years ago. “The project contains photos and documents of the testimonies kept in the partner institutions, as well as in private collections, such as the archive of Eugenia Cadariu Bormioli, the great granddaughter of Transylvanian leader Stefan Cicio-Pop, thus building a valuable database available online. The tokens of the Union are varied, many of these are little known by the general public: newspapers, photos, letters, books, journals, cameras, flags, furniture and clothing, personal items of the participants in this great historical event such as watches, rings, stamps, painting, decorations, licenses, medals, maps that give contour to the histories of the union to Romania of Bessarabia (27 March, 1918), Bukovina (15/28 November 1918), Transylvania, Banat, Crisana and Maramures, on 1 December, 1918, in Alba Iulia,” according to a press release of the National History Museum of Romania and issued on Monday to AGERPRES. The website further presents, through texts and pictures, the histories of the Union’s cities – Chisinau, Cernauti and Alba Iulia – presenting the leaders of the Union from all the historical regions of the country, but also their tragic destiny after 1945 when they were exterminated, having “the guilt” of making the Greater Romania. “The Virtual Museum of the Union has united, through stories and images, the cultural institutions in Romania in the Year of the Centennial and will be available at www.mvu.ro starting with its launch date, 21 November, respectively,” reads the press release. The project was funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Identity through the Centennial Program and was developed in partnership with the National Archives of Romania, the National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives, the National History Museum of Moldova (Chisinau, Republic of Moldova), the Cotroceni National Museum, as well as several museums of history, ethnography and art in the country.
