According to some sources, the American president, Donald Trump informed the Romanian authorities in an official letter that he will not take part in the B9 summit which will be in Bucharest. Even so, the United States intends to be represented at the event, possibly through the State Secretary Marco Rubio although it is not clear if he will be physically in Romania or he will participate through video conference, as it happened in the past with officials from the Biden administration. According to cited sources, in a letter sent to President Nicusor Dan, Donald Trump thanked Romania for increasing its defense spending as a percentage of GDP and for its support in the context of the conflict in the Middle East between the U.S. and Iran, but noted that he would be unable to attend the summit in person. In May, Romania will become the main stage for diplomatic maneuvering in the region. Bucharest is preparing to host the B9 Summit, an event that brings together major figures in international politics. President Nicu?or Dan is expected to welcome Emmanuel Macron and Recep Tayyip Erdo?an during meetings that will strengthen Romania’s role in the region. The B9 summit will be attended firstly by the countries on the Eastern Flank, taking into consideration that this summit started one decade ago in order to counter Russian aggression. Similarly, there will be also the Nordic countries, Finland, Sweden and Norway, Denmark and Iceland. The list of participants includes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the NATO leader, a sign that the stakes of the meeting are high. The event in Bucharest will be attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who will participate in the summit’s closing luncheon. Representatives from the Baltic and Nordic countries will also be present at the meeting, according to information provided by official sources to HotNews. B9 is a cooperation format launched in 2015 by the then-presidents of Romania and Poland, Klaus Iohannis and Andrzej Duda, in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The initiative serves as a platform for consultation and coordination of the positions of NATO countries on the eastern flank. The most recent B9 meeting took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, and was attended by, among others, Romanian President Nicusor Dan, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the NATO Secretary General, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This summit in Bucharest is seen as a key opportunity to strengthen cooperation among NATO member states in the eastern region and to discuss security issues in the context of tensions with Russia and the crisis in the Middle East.
