Economy minister: Romania to become major defense industry producer

April 1, 2025

Minister of Economy, Digital Transformation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism Bogdan Gruia Ivan  was on a working visit to the municipality of Barlad - Vaslui County on Friday to discuss with the county and local authorities solutions for the county's reindustrialization. The minister visited the Barlad Bearings Factory where he asked the company's management to seek licensing for becoming a supplier to the defense industry, as plans are afoot for Romania to become a major defense industry manufacturer."Thanks to large infrastructure investments in the past three years, Barlad will be less than 60 kilometers from the Moldova motorway. We are looking for solutions for the capital area, for working capital for industrial companies, including the Barlad Bearings Factory, which is a landmark company with an incredible history. It is one of the three factories in Europe with an almost complete in-house production cycle. For us, this factory represents a priority. With the construction of the motorway and the reconstruction of Ukraine ahead, the entire northern and eastern area of Romania will develop. We agreed with the bearing manufacturer to start procedures to license the factory to become a defense industry supplier, which is extremely important. In the 2025 budget we already have RON 1 billion earmarked for investments in Romania's military industry, in production. It only follows naturally that we want to turn Romania into one of the major producers for the defense segment," said Bogdan Gruia Ivan.President of the Vaslui County Council Ciprian Trifan emphasized the need for investments in the area, stating that opening local industrial parks is a major option in this regard.
