Elena Lasconi and Roberta Metsola discuss Schengen and Republic of Moldova

November 20, 2024

The President of Save Romania Union (USR), Elena Lasconi, met, on Monday, with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola and during their discussion Romania's accession to Schengen and the situation of the Republic of Moldova were tackled."I thanked Roberta Metsola for being an honest friend of Romania whose voice strongly supported our country's accession to Schengen, clearly stating that we have met all the necessary technical criteria and that it is unfair to delay this recognition. I know that we share the same conviction: Romania's integration into Schengen is not a symbolic step, but an essential one for the consolidation of the European Union. As president of the USR and a candidate for the presidential elections, I consider that our European path is the correct and natural option for Romania's future," Lasconi said, according to a USR press release. The two discussed the situation in the Republic of Moldova and the fight against authoritarianism and propaganda."I discussed with Mrs. Metsola also about the Republic of Moldova, which we want together irrevocably placed on the road to the European Union. We all see, these days, how great the power of each vote is and how fragile the border between democracy and authoritarianism is especially when Russian propaganda is working intensively. The European Union must not only understand these threats, but also find the most effective methods to deal with them. I assured Roberta Metsola that I will work with her so that Romania can brings more stability and solidarity to Europe. Together, we will find the best solutions for whatever problems the future may bring. A united Europe is a strong Europe," says Lasconi. She adds that she appreciates Metsola not only because she "managed to be an extremely relevant politician" in Europe, but also for the values she supports: unity, freedom of expression, a strong European Union."I am very glad that we are on the same page when it comes to the institutions of a state, which can only be strong as long as the politicians do not take over them, do not impose their people in their positions and do not make decisions without arguments", says the USR leader.
