Environment Minister: 70% of the country is affected by various phases of the geological drought

July 21, 2022

The minister of environment,Tanczos Barna stated, on Wednesday, in the government  meeting, that 70% of the country is affected by various phases of pedological drought, and as regards the strategic reserve of water, the 40 reservoirs with strategic importance, are at a filling degree of 68%.   The minister made an appeal to rational usage of drinkable water, as it means huge investments to get, treat, transport and distribute and we cannot during drought periods to consume more than ten times more than during a normal period, to water the plants.   The minister referred to the strategic reserves of water, saying that the 40 reservoirs with strategic importance are at a level of filling of 68%. ‘We can ensure the water strategic reserve, but in parallel, some hydrographic basins suffer a huge deficit of rain. There are already pools where there are dry rivers and there are already river basins where prolonged drought phenomena show their effects,” he said.     Tanczos Barna also said that there are some regions where ‘ the average of rains over the last ten months is at less than half against the previous years’ said Barna, giving as an example areas such as Tecuci, Adjud, Barland, Botosani, Darbani and even Miercurea Ciuc.    ‘The following three weeks will be characterised by these extreme phenomena and after 15th comes a wave of heat which will amplify this drought’ the minister of environment said.
