The total value of environmental taxes nationwide stood at approximately 33.7 billion lei in 2024, equivalent to 1.9% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Friday.At the same time, environmental taxes accounted for 6.9% of total tax and social contribution revenue.According to the quoted source, the largest share of environmental taxes in the period under review was related to energy, representing 92.7% of the total. In this category, the highest contribution came from the manufacturing industry, with 14.1 billion lei, accounting for 45.1% of energy taxes.Taxes on transport, pollution and resources accounted for 7.3% of total environmental taxes.Within this category, in the case of transport taxes by economic activities, the most significant amount collected was recorded in households, with 1.7 billion lei, representing 69.2% of total taxes in this sector.Moreover, the most significant pollution and resource taxes by economic activities came from the extractive industry, with 33.3 million lei, representing 56.8% of total taxes in this segment.By comparison, over the 2006-2024 period, environmental taxes showed a fluctuating trend, rising from 6.7 billion lei in 2006, at current prices, to 33.7 billion lei in 2024, increasing by 406%.Over the same reference period, energy taxes held the largest share of environmental taxes, with an average of 88.8%, thus predominantly influencing their overall evolution.Environmental taxes reached their highest share of GDP in 2015 (2.5%), while the lowest level was recorded in 2008 (1.7%).According to official statistics, in 2024 the manufacturing industry accounted for the largest share in the distribution of environmental taxes in Romania, with 42.1%, followed by other economic activities with 28.3%, while the construction sector recorded the lowest share (0.3%).
