EP President Roberta Metsola, laureate of Timisoara Award for European Values

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, is the laureate of the Timisoara Award for European Values, which will be presented to Her Excellency at a ceremony to be held on May 22.According to a press release issued on Tuesday by Timisoara City Hall, the award was granted by a jury made up of leading personalities of the Romanian professional body in various fields."In designating Her Excellency, the jury appreciates that through her strong leadership and clear vision of a united and resilient Europe, she has demonstrated that politics can be an instrument of progress and hope. At a time of major challenges for Europe, Roberta Metsola has been instrumental in mobilizing European support for Ukraine, promoting concrete humanitarian and military assistance measures, as well as supporting the European integration of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The jury is impressed by Roberta Metsola's firm position as a reliable ally of Romania in its efforts to join the Schengen Area, constantly reaffirming that our country's place is alongside the other member states in this area of free movement," reads the press release.Mayor of Timisoara Dominic Fritz, who is the initiator of the award and a member of the jury, said in the press release that the distinction stands for "an acknowledgement of Roberta Metsola's firm position as a defender and promoter of European values"."Roberta Metsola was at the forefront of those who mobilized European support when Russia invaded Ukraine. She is part of the young generation of European politicians who believe in the European construction and in the values that define it and who rebuilds, day by day, people's trust in democracy and institutions. We look forward to seeing her in Timisoara to celebrate Europe together," said Dominic Fritz.The Timisoara Award for European Values was established "to honour internationally recognized personalities who, with determination, courage and creativity, promote or defend European values inside and outside the European Union".The first laureate was the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, who was present in Timisoara last year.The members of the jury are: Iulia Motoc - judge of the International Criminal Court, Cristian Macelaru - music director of the Orchestre National de France, Simona Miculescu - ambassador, president of UNESCO General Conference, Anca Miruna Lazarescu - director and screenwriter, Adriana Babeti - writer and literary critic, Dominic Fritz - mayor of Timisoara.
