European Commissioner for Justice Vera Jourova visits Bucharest

November 19, 2018

European Commissioner for Justice Vera Jourova will be in Bucharest on Monday and Tuesday, her agenda including meetings with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, with the Justice Minister, the Finance Minister, and High Court of Cassation and Justice President Cristina Tarcea. Vera Jourova’s visit is meant to lay out some priorities in the field of justice, against the backdrop in which Romania is preparing to take over the presidency of the Council of the EU. Justice minister Tudorel Toader is to meet on Tuesday in Bucharest the European Commissioner for Justice, Vera Jourova. Toader announced on Monday at the Superior Council of Magistrates (CSM) seat that the meeting scheduled with Vera Jourova was postponed for Tuesday. “Due to the meteorological conditions, the flight with the European Commissioner Vera Jourova is delayed, we have therefore rescheduled the meeting for tomorrow (Tuesday, ed. n.) at half past twelve,” Toader said. On Tuesday, Vera Jourova will also meet National Authority for Consumer Protection President Marius Parvu, the president of the High Court of Cassation and Justice Cristina Tarcea, to discuss the changes taking place in the Romanian judicial system, and Ancuta Gianina Opre, President of the National Authority for the Oversight of Personal Data Management (ANSCPC). The meeting with President Klaus Iohannis will take place after the European Commissioner takes part in a debate about children whose parents are working abroad. The visit of the European Commissioner for Justice comes several days after the European Commission published its CVM report, which criticises Romania for the legislative changes that have reversed the progress registered in the last 10 years. As a result, the European Commission has added eight new recommendations coming on top of those issued in January 2017, EC First Vice President Frans Timmermans concluded.
