In almost all member states of the EU, the total number of immigrants from outside the EU was larger, in 2024 than the number of immigrants from other EU member states, the only exceptions being Luxembourg and Romania, show the data published on Friday by Eurostat.According to those data, in 2024, the proportion of immigrants from other EU member states was 85.5% in Luxembourg and 56% in Romania.At the other end, the highest proportion of immigrants from countries outside the EU were registered in the Czech Republic (87%), Italy (86.2%) and Spain (84.5%). According to Eurostat, 4.2 million people migrated to the EU from third countries in 2024. This figure does not include the asylum seekers and/or refugees from Ukraine under temporary protection in some countries. In addition, 1.5 million people have migrated between EU countries.In total, in 2024, in the EU there were approximately 9.2 immigrants from third countries per 1,000 inhabitants.Taking into account the size of the resident population, Malta recorded the highest immigration rate from EU and third countries in 2024 (60 immigrants per 1,000 inhabitants), followed by Cyprus (42) and Luxembourg (38). Romania ranks only 10th with approximately 15 immigrants per 1,000 inhabitants. At the other end, Slovakia registered the lowest rate of immigration with one immigrant per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by France (6), Italy, Latvia, Bulgaria and Poland (all with 8 immigrants per 1,000 inhabitants).
