Eurostat: Romania’s GDP per capita surpassed Hungary’s last year

April 25, 2024

In 2023, the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, measured in purchasing power standards, varied from 64% of the EU average in Bulgaria to 240% in Luxembourg, according to Eurostat last report.   In 2023, notable disparities in GDP per capita, measured in purchasing power standards, were observed across EU nations. Luxembourg and Ireland boasted the highest levels, surpassing the EU average by 140% and 112% respectively, followed by the Netherlands (+30%), Denmark (+28%), and Austria (+23%).   Conversely, Bulgaria reported the lowest GDP per capita, falling 36% below the EU average, with Greece (-33%) and Latvia (-29%) following suit.   In the case of Romania, there was a modest enhancement in 2023, rising from 76% in 2022 to 78% of the European Union average, influenced by the performance of other member states. Notably, Romania has surpassed Hungary, which still contends with higher inflation rates than Romania, as well as Croatia, Slovakia, and Latvia.   However, Romania still trails behind Poland, which stands at 80% of the EU average, though the gap has slightly narrowed.
