Eurostat: Romania’s inflation in January - the second in the EU

March 23, 2025

After ten months in which Romania had the highest inflation in the EU, in January the first place was occupied by Hungary, with 5.7%, followed by Romania (5.3%) and Croatia (5%), according to data published on Monday by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).   The annual inflation rate in the European Union rose to 2.8% in January, from 2.7% in December, while in the euro area inflation rose to 2.5% in January, from 2.4% in December.   Inflation in the euro area is above the European Central Bank’s 2% target. Last month, the lowest annual inflation rates in the EU were recorded in Denmark (1.4%), Ireland, Italy and Finland (all 1.7%).   Compared with December 2024, the annual inflation rate fell in eight EU Member States (including Romania, from 5.5% to 5.3%), remained stable in four and increased in 15 EU Member States. Eurostat data also shows that core inflation in the euro area, i.e. what remains after volatile goods prices such as energy and food are removed, remained unchanged at 2.7% in January, a level it has been at since September.   Core inflation is the indicator closely monitored by the ECB when making its monetary policy decisions.   In Romania, according to data recently published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), the annual inflation rate fell to 4.95% in January 2025, from 5.14% in December, as food prices rose by 4.54%, non-food prices by 4.60%, and services by 6.54%.   “The consumer price index in January 2025 compared to December 2024 was 100.92%. The annual inflation rate in January 2025 compared to January 2024 was 5%. The average rate of change in consumer prices in the last 12 months (February 2024 – January 2025) compared to the previous 12 months (February 2023 – January 2024) was 5.4%,” the INS press release states.   The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has revised upwards, to 3.8%, from 3.5% previously, the inflation forecast for the end of 2025 and anticipates that it will reach 3.1% at the end of 2026, according to data presented on February 17 by the Governor of the BNR, Mugur Isarescu.
