External debt of Romania's public administration reaches almost 31pct of GDP in May

 The external debt of Romania's public administration rose to RON 599.946 billion in May, from RON 592.836 billion lei in the previous month, making up 30.8% of GDP (30.5% of GDP in April 2026), according to data with the Ministry of Finance.The external debt of the central public administration amounted to RON 593.117 billion, and that of the local public administration to RON 6.83 billion. About 78.5% of the external debt, or RON 471 billion, was represented by government bonds.On the other hand, the domestic debt of the public administration in May totalled RON 594.1 billion (RON 578.715 billion in April 2026), which is 30.5% of GDP (29.7% of GDP, in the previous month), of which RON 573.665 billion was the debt of the central administration and RON 20.433 billion the debt of the local administrationThe total debt of the public administration (government debt) was standing at RON 1,194 billion in May 2026, up from RON 1,171 billion in the previous month. As a percentage of GDP, government debt increased to 61.4%, from 60.2% in April 2026 (GDP according to the INS press release of July 9, 2026).In May 2026, medium- and long-term debt increased to RON 1,139 billion, from RON 1,113 billion in the previous month, and short-term debt fell to RON 54.3 billion, from RON 58.46 billion.Most of this debt, namely RON 956.417 billion, was represented by government securities. The loans amounted to RON 214.773 billion.The debt stated in the national currency, the leu (RON), amounted to RON 529.45 billion; when stated in euros (EUR) to RON 537.346 billion equivalent, and the debt stated in US dollars (USD) to RON 124.29 billion equivalent.The debt of the central public administration in May 2026 increased to RON 1,166 billion, from RON 1,144 billion in April 2026, of which RON 1,112 billion in the medium and long term. Most of the central government's debt was contracted in lei (RON 509.27 billion) and in EUR (RON 530.26 billion equivalent).The debt of the local public administration rose to RON 27.262 billion from RON 26.7 billion in the previous month, including RON 27.24 billion in the medium- and long-term debt.
