Fifor at the end of his mandate as Defence Minister: I will continue to support the Armed Forces’ projects

At the end of his mandate, Mihai Fifor has stated that the office of Defence Minister was honouring and demanding, thanking his comrades from all military structures. At the same time, Fifor pointed out that he will continue to support the projects of the Romanian Armed Forces in his capacity as Senator. “I conclude my mandate at the helm of the National Defence Ministry. It has been the most honouring, the most demanding, but also the fullest period of satisfactions in my entire political career, a period in which I tried to serve my Motherland in an upright way, with dedication, dignity and professionalism. During these 14 months, I had the privilege of getting to know the Romanian Armed Forces as a large, united and steadfast family, depository of authentic patriotism, of self-sacrifice that is not on a simple declarative level but that is proven each day. I was received in each garrison with camaraderie and warmth, I learned enormously from each of the servicemen I have worked with, regardless of rank or office,” ex-Minister Mihai Fifor wrote on Facebook. Fifor added that he is convinced that the Romanian Government will continue to accurately observe the commitments taken in the field of Defence through the Governance Programme. “I have already included in the draft budget for 2019 the earmarking of 2 percent of GDP. This will allow a robust approach in the strategic endowment programmes, which have registered major developments this year and I am sure will continue to an even greater extent, matching the challenges that lie ahead at regional level and in allied context. (…) I would like to thank especially the comrades from all military structures, active, in reserve or retired, the war veterans, the veterans from theatres [of operations] and their families for allowing me to be by their side and for offering me the possibility of honest and productive collaboration. All the legislative acts we jointly worked on will follow their course in an alert fashion and I take the commitment that they will be approved by the Government and Parliament with maximum celerity,” the ex-minister wrote. In his message, Fifor wished all the best to designated Defence Minister Gabriel Les, and pointed out that he will continue to support the projects of the Armed Forces. “I would like to wish all the best to Minister Les, who will start working after he is sworn in as National Defence Minister. In what concerns me, I will continue to support with all my strength the projects of the Romanian Armed Forces, in my capacity as Senator and from the political office I have taken, being convinced that no effort can be too great when we are talking about the security and defence of our nation!”, Fifor writes. Mihai Fifor resigned on Monday, ahead of the PSD’s National Executive Committee (NatExCom) meeting, pointing out that he did that in order to get involved in the party’s activity. PSD President Liviu Dragnea announced on Monday, after the Executive Committee meeting, that Mihai Fifor has been nominated as acting president of PSD’s National Council.
