Final electricity consumption in Romania increases by 1.8pct in 2024

Final electricity consumption in Romania in 2024 was up 1.8% over 2023, amid an increase in household consumption by 2.7% and in commercial electricity consumption by 1.6%, while public lighting decreased by 6.7%, data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) show. In 2024 the main primary energy sources totalled 32.713 million tons of oil equivalent (toe), down 27,900 toe from January 1 - December 31, 2023.Also, domestic production amounted to 16.916 million toe, down 4.6% year-on-year, and imports amounted to 15.797 million toe, up 5.2%.Official data reveal that, in 2024, electricity sources were 66.248 billion kWh, down 35.2 million kWh from the previous year, with thermal power plants having generated 17.455 billion kWh (-3.1%), and hydropower plants14.313 billion kWh (-23.1%).At the same time, nuclear-power plants generated 10.912 billion kWh, down 279.1 million kWh (-2.5%), while the production from wind power plants amounted to 6.358 billion kWh, down 1.266 billion kWh from 2023.The solar energy produced in photovoltaic installations was 3.408 billion kWh, increasing by 1.183 billion kWh.As for electricity exports, they stood at 10.843 billion kWh, down 791.1 million kWh from the previous year.Technological self-consumption in networks and stations was 4.897 billion kWh, down 143.7 million kWh.In 2024, the final consumption of electricity jumped 1.8% to 50.508 billion kWh, the final commercial electricity consumption increased by 1.6%, and household consumption increased by 2.7%, while public lighting decreased by 6.7%, year-on-year.
