Ford Otosan Romania will invest 36.45 million lei in a photovoltaic park at its Craiova plant with an installed capacity of 5.10 MW; the energy produced will be used entirely for the facility's own consumption, the company announced in a press release on Wednesday.Of the project's total value, 8.63 million lei represents non-repayable funding granted through the Modernisation Fund, while the remainder will be covered by Ford Otosan Romania's own funds. The new photovoltaic park is expected to generate approximately 5,531 MWh of electricity from renewable sources annually. According to company estimates, the use of this energy will lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 3,385 tonnes of CO2 per year, a figure calculated based on the emission factor associated with electricity consumed from the grid. The project is funded through the Modernisation Fund, under the programme dedicated to investments in new renewable energy generation capacities for self-consumption. The financing agreement with the Ministry of Energy was signed on August 19, 2026.At Ford Otosan, we integrate sustainability into all our activities to help build a better future. In manufacturing, this means investing in concrete solutions that reduce our environmental impact. We already use photovoltaic glass and rooftop solar systems at our plants in Türkiye. The Craiova project brings this approach to Romania as well and will support the plant's long-term competitiveness, said Firat Elhüseyni, President of Ford Otosan Romania. The investment is part of Ford Otosan's sustainability strategy, which aims, among other things, to electrify the product lineup, reduce the environmental impact of production and logistics operations, and utilise energy from renewable sources. In March 2025, the Craiova plant began deliveries of the first electric passenger cars and commercial vehicles produced in Romania: the Ford Puma Gen-E, E-Transit Courier, and E-Tourneo Courier. The batteries for these vehicles are also assembled at the Craiova facility.Regarding the reduction of emissions from logistics operations, Ford Otosan Romania launched an intermodal rail transport route between Craiova and Türkiye in February 2025, in partnership with Mars Logistics. According to company data, this solution reduces transport-related emissions by 63% compared to road transport. Ford Otosan Romania currently manufactures the internal combustion engine and fully electric versions of the Ford Transit Courier, Tourneo Courier, and Puma models at its Craiova plant, as well as the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. The plant operates on a three-shift basis for vehicle and engine production and employs approximately 5,500 people.Ford Otosan was founded in 1959, with Ford Motor Company and Koç Holding holding equal stakes in the company. The manufacturer has a workforce of over 20,000 and operates production and development centres in Türkiye and Romania.
