Foreign minister Oana Toiu: Boosting NATO, EU presence and investments in region, in our strategic interest

June 29, 2025

Newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Toiu attended on Tuesday the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council organised on the sidelines of the 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague, context in which she underlined the importance of boosting the North Atlantic Alliance and the European Union presence and investments in the region."We protect, alongside the allied forces, the border of the European Union and it is in our strategic interest that both NATO and EU presence and investments in our region grow, so that in time, when peace and prosperity return, the EU border will extend beyond our own borders," Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said in her address, according to a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).MAE shows that Minister Oana Toiu welcomed US efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace and Ukraine's commitment to this goal, as opposed to Russia's lack of interest, which is preventing progress in this process. She evoked Romania's multidimensional support for Ukraine and reaffirmed its commitment to continue it, underlining the impact of Russian aggression at regional, Euro-Atlantic and global level.Oana Toiu emphasized, in this context, the role of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the USA in ensuring the security of the Black Sea region. The minister also referred to Russia's hybrid attacks against NATO allies and partners, emphasizing the importance of continued support for the Republic of Moldova in order to strengthen its resilience and its European course.MAE notes that through the participation of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, the EU reaffirmed its interest in working closely with the Alliance in support of Ukraine, both in the urgent provision of security assistance and in the field of the defence industry. On the sidelines of the ministerial meeting, the Romanian Foreign Minister had brief interactions and discussions with NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Sekerinska, as well as with counterparts from Poland, Finland, the Czech Republic, Norway, Latvia, the Netherlands, Canada, the USA, Luxembourg, France, Turkey, Spain, Ukraine and the EU High Representative for CFSP.  (Photo:https://www.mae.ro/)
