Foreign Ministry completes analytical report on potential relocation of Romanian Embassy to Jerusalem, refers it to PM

October 14, 2018

Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Melescanu annouced on Friday that the Ministry has completed the analytical report on the potential relocation of Romania’s Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and referred the document the Premier; the Government will next send it to the Presidency and the Speakers of the two Chambers of Parliament, Melescanu said. “The assessment of the Embassy’s move to Jerusalem was sent to the Prime Minister and after the relevant observations are made – we’ll see if there are any – the Government will send it to the Presidency and to the heads of the two Chambers. How long it will take to make the decision does not depend on me, as far as we are concerned, we have finished our job, the Ministry has practically completed the analysis,” Melescanu said. He said there are no bottlenecks,  that “this is a process in which everyone is involved,” but the issue is indeed very complicated. “As far as we are concerned, we have listed in our report both the elements of interest and the things that can have a negative effect, but the decision does not lie with us. The purpose of this analysis was to present to the political decision makers all the pros and cons for everybody to know and for Romania to have a current, coordinated position,” the Foreign Minister said.   Foreign Minister about position of Romania’s ambassador in Israel: We are looking to maybe find another candidate   Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu on Friday announced it is possible to make a new proposal for the office of ambassador of Romania in Israel, in the context in which President Klaus Iohannis did not offer any answer yet with respect to the person already proposed for the job. Asked what happened with the position of ambassador of Romania in Israel, Melescanu said he wished an ambassador would be appointed this week. “I very much desire to happen this week (to have the Romanian ambassador in Israel appointed – editor’s note), in the context in which the proposal was made as early as in March this year. Since a lot of time has passed, we will have to examine the possibility of maybe coming with a new proposal,” stated Melescanu at the Parliament Palace. He mentioned that he received no answer from Cotroceni (Presidential Palace) related to this topic and he did not speak with the head of the state or any other representative of the Presidential Administration about this.   “This is, after all, the presidential institution’s decision, but what I think is that, considering that it has been a long time and considering the importance of the relations between Romania and Israel, we could examine including the possibility of proposing a different candidate,” said the minister. Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Melescanu on March 22 had announced that Prime Minister Viorica Dancila approved a proposal for the position of ambassador of Romania in Israel, but he wasn’t going to make it public until the President of the country gave his approval or made a decision related to this.
