ForMin Toiu, about incidents with Russian drones that fell on Romanian territory:I reported it to UN Security Council

May 20, 2026

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Toiu, stated that Romania has reported to the NATO Security Council the incidents related to Russian drones that entered the territory of our country."We had an intervention in the United Nations Security Council - there was a conversation hosted by Bahrain on maritime security at the beginning of the week - and then we also asked Romania to intervene in order to be able to signal, even in the Security Council, the risks we see and to firmly condemn, at a diplomatic level, the decision that the Russian Federation took, first of all, the attack it has in Ukraine and the killing of civilians and the attack on civilian infrastructure and, obviously, the lack of responsibility that led to the violation of Romania's airspace, allied airspace," said Oana Toiu, on TVR Info. She recalled that the Russian ambassador was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to "clarify Romania's firm protest" regarding incidents with drones entering national space."There were several drones belonging to the Russian Federation, drones that Russia uses in the illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, even at our border and, lo and behold, in a few moments they crossed our border, they reached our airspace, and the recent case is a case in which they also reached Romanian territory, of course, in households. More serious than that is that they were drones that had an explosive charge. It is for the first time, since the beginning of the war, that we have this direct risk to which we are subject and then, obviously, the diplomatic response had to be firm. The ambassador was summoned, he was summoned at the level of the space director to clarify Romania's firm protest," the Foreign Minister specified. And the Secretary of State for Strategic and Global Affairs, Ana Tinca, who was visiting the United Nations headquarters this week, on the occasion of the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT Rev Con), condemned ''Russia's irresponsible actions, which, through risks to navigation safety and repeated violations of the airspace of other states, seriously affect the regional security situation''."During the Security Council debate on maritime security, the Romanian Secretary of State presented a national statement in which he condemned Russia's irresponsible actions, which, through risks to navigation safety and repeated violations of the airspace of other states, seriously affect the regional security situation. In this context, the Romanian official informed about the recent incident, consisting of the fall of a drone loaded with explosives into a household in Romania, and firmly condemned these actions," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Friday, in a statement. On April 25, a drone used by the Russian Federation against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine illegally entered Romanian airspace and damaged a household and an electricity pole on a street on the outskirts of the city of Galati, without exploding and without any casualties. The drone, which was loaded with explosives, was lifted by specialists and detonated in a controlled manner outside the city. 515 people were evacuated from the city of Galati. On April 26, the Ministry of National Defense was informed that drone fragments were reported between the towns of Luncavi?a and V?careni in Tulcea County. The Romanian Intelligence Service's pyrotechnicians detected explosive charges in those drone fragments. On Saturday, two F-16 aircraft from the Air Police combat service took off from the 86th Air Base in Fetesti after ground radars detected the brief intrusion of a drone into national airspace in the Chilia area, the Ministry of National Defense reported.  (Photo:https://www.mae.ro/)
