ForMin Toiu, in national address to UNGA: Action needed, not just words

October 9, 2025

The reform of the UN Security Council, solidarity with the Republic of Moldova, a just peace in the Middle East, and humanitarian assistance are key points on Romania's global strategic agenda for a safer and fairer world, Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said on Sunday, during her national address to the United Nations General Assembly, held in New York.'I had the honour of delivering Romania's address at this year's UN General Assembly, a session with special significance: we mark 70 years since our country joined the organisation and 80 years since its creation. I conveyed our strategic priorities for a safer and fairer world, Romania's vision on global challenges, which involves dialogue to achieve peace in active conflicts and respect for the rules-based international order,' Toiu wrote on Facebook. The Romanian Foreign minister's message focused on items from the global agenda requiring concrete action.'Our message is consistent and inspired by the diplomatic tradition of Nicolae Titulescu, former President of the League of Nations, whom I mentioned at the UN podium before outlining several items on the global agenda that require action, not just words,' Oana Toiu pointed out.Regarding the reform of the Security Council, the minister said that it is 'a moral and legal absurdity for an aggressor state to have the power to block, through its veto right, any action by the international community intended to stop a war that it itself has started, unprovoked and uninvited.''On behalf of Romania, I called for this fundamental instrument for global peace to be reformed so that it reflects the painful reality and can no longer be paralysed by those who violate the UN Charter,' Toiu explained. The Romanian minister also issued a firm warning regarding the situation in the Republic of Moldova, where parliamentary elections were being held on Sunday.'I denounced the disinformation campaign and malicious foreign interference orchestrated by the Russian Federation on an unprecedented scale, with the clear aim of undermining the sovereign right of Moldovan citizens to determine their own future,' the minister stressed.Additionally, Oana Toiu advocated for 'a just peace in the Middle East and humanitarian assistance.''I highlighted the urgency of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of hostages, and the guaranteed access of humanitarian aid for the civilian population. I mentioned the implementation of the two-state solution, an approach Romania has supported for over 30 years. Alongside these points, I reiterated our unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and emphasised our commitment to human rights, the fight against climate change, and sustainable development,' Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Toiu further mentioned.
