French missile defence detachment to be deployed in Capu Midia

May 26, 2022

France will deploy a missile defence detachment in the National Training Centre for Air Defence in Capu Midia, according to a press release of the Ministry of National Defence (MApN)."The deployment of this weapon system is also part of strengthening NATO's deterrence and defence posture on Europe's Eastern Flank. It proves France's ability and willingness to protect its interests and those of its European allies and allows strengthening the strategic partnership between France and Romania, which was concluded in 2007, especially in the field of ground-to-air defence," said a press release of the French Embassy in Bucharest.Operated by one hundred aviators, the MAMBA medium-range ground-to-air system is a sophisticated weapon system that can provide a bubble of protection for the benefit of forces operating in the coverage area. In order to increase the effectiveness of the system and to meet the needs of NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD), it is connected and integrated through a tactical data connection with Romania's defence system and NATO's.According to the Ministry of National Defence, the NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup (BGFP) in Romania is established, starting with May, by transforming the allied multinational elements within the NATO Response Force, deployed in our country. At France's proposal to take over the role of nation-frame, the French battalion deployed in Romania, considered the "Spearhead" of NATO's Highly Reaction Force (VJTF), will form the BGFP on the national territory, integrating, by rotation, troops from Belgium and the Netherlands. The main forces of the BGFP will be deployed in the National Joint Training Centre in Cincu where they will carry out missions and training activities together with the structures of the Romanian Army.BGFP will lead to the increase of Romania's military cooperation with France and, implicitly, to the increase of the security of the Euro-Atlantic space on the Eastern Flank. Cooperation with the strategic partners and the existence on the national territory of some relevant combat structures contribute to the increase in the reaction capacity in the context of the crisis in the Black Sea region, states the Ministry of National Defence.
