Gas imports drop 6.2 pct, domestic production goes up 1.5 pct in 2023

Romania's net gas imports in 2023 amounted to 2.117 million tons of oil equivalent (toe), 6.2 percent down (-141,000 toe) from the previous year, shows data released on Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).The domestic production of natural gas last year totaled 7.5 million toe, up 1.5 percent (+109,000 toe) over 2022.According to estimates by the National Economic Strategy and Forecasting Board (CNSP), Romania's natural gas production will rise at an average annual rate of 3.6 percent over 2023 - 2026, after having decreased 1.1 percent (to 7.343 million toe) in 2022.In its latest Energy Balance Forecast, CNSP predicts a 2.4 percent increase in Romania's gas production (to 7.935 million toe) in 2024, an upward trend that will continue by an advance of 2.7 percent (to 8.15 million toe) in 2025 and of 3.8 percent (to 8.455 million toe) in 2026.Natural gas imports are projected to decrease until 2026 at an average annual rate of 2.2 percent.Thus, imports are estimated to reach 1.845 million toe this year, 1.79 million toe (-2.8 percent) in 2024, 1.755 million toe (-2.1 percent) in 2025, and 1.725 million toe (-1.8 percent) in 2026.
